West Chester, Pa. — The Avon Grove, Salesianum and St. Mark’s scholastic teams were all in action on Friday night (Nov. 1). Recaps of their respective Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League games follow in this edition of ‘Around The Rinks.’

Avon Grove 3, West Chester Bayard Rustin 2 (OT)

The Devils and the Knights traded goals in each of the first two periods before Brandon Hughes sealed a 3-2 win for Avon Grove (1-1-0) 52 seconds into overtime at Ice Line in West Chester, Pa. Jack Page scored both Rustin goals, with Johnny Pepe and J.T. McDonald both answering for Avon Grove in the first and second periods, respectively.

Unionville 5, Salesianum 3

The Unionville Indians used a three-goal second period to edge clear of Salesianum (0-1-0), who fell short, 5-3, in their season opener at the Patriot Ice Center in Newark, Del. Cam Bergeman — who led the Sals with a hat trick – opened the scoring 2:11 into the first period off a James Bell assist, but Philippe Doucette responded to tie the game at one at 5:24.

Jake Petrillo led the Indians’ charge in the second period with two goals — both assisted by Doucette, and defenceman Levi Jones contributed a power play goal. After Bergeman brought Salesianum back within one goal 2:30 into the third period, Nolan Masters countered with Unionville’s fifth goal at 5:43.

Aiden Kikut saved 21 shots of 26 faced in defeat for Salesianum, while Keigan Craig improved to 2-0-0 in net for Unionville with an 18-save outing on 21 total shots.

Bishop Shanahan 5, St. Mark’s 4 (OT)

Despite only fielding 10 skaters in their season opener at Ice Line, the St. Mark’s Spartans (0-0-1) sprinted to a 4-0 lead over Bishop Shanahan through the first 22-1/2 minutes of the contest, only to give up five unanswered goals and be handed defeat by an Aidan Urie goal 3:53 into overtime.

The Spartans commanded the entire first period: Kylee Schmitz potted her first scholastic goal at 5:21 before assisting Graham Kline on his first of two tallies to lift St. Mark’s to a 3-0 intermission lead. Will Ralsten gave the Spartans a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, but the Eagles promptly turned the tables. Colin O’Donnell scored twice and assisted on Urie’s overtime winner; Matthew Fee and Ryan McCarthy registered the other Shanahan goals.

Sam Griffith saved 25 of 30 shots in defeat for St. Mark’s, while Domenic Veneziale stopped 40 of 44 shots he faced in net for Shanahan.
