The DFRC Hockey for a Cause event will take place at the Fred Rust Arena on the campus of the University of Delaware, and will feature a doubleheader comprised entirely of teams based in the First State. The combined teams of A.I. DuPont/Conrad and Hodgson/Caravel will square off in the early game at 6:00 p.m., with powerhouses St. Mark’s and Salesianum taking to the ice at 7:30 p.m.
“It’s hard to believe we are in our tenth Hockey for a Cause event,” said Brian LeBlanc, coach of the defending Flyers Cup champion Salesianum. “We are looking forward to another great event that raises money for a great cause.”
In November, players and coaches from all four teams hosted a “buddy night” at Gold Arena. The teams invited their “buddies” on-ice to pass pucks around and take shots on goal before feasting on pizza afterwards.
“Some of the fondest memories our alumni have of their days playing at Salesianum not only include the actual game versus St. Mark’s, but the practice day with the buddies DFRC arranges,” continued LeBlanc.
Officials and media are donating their time and talents free of charge to support DFRC and their mission to enrich the lives of Delawareans with intellectual disABILITIES. The doubleheader will be streamed on Delaware Hockey Night Radio, with veteran horse-racing announcer and University of Delaware Division 2 play-by-play broadcaster James Witherite handling the call of both games.
“DFRC is so grateful that we are celebrating ten years of Hockey for a Cause,” DFRC Executive Director Dr. Tony Glenn stated. “It was St. Mark’s head coach Bob Teeven who approached me eleven years ago asking if there was some way that his team could become involved with DFRC. After a year of discussing and planning, Hockey for a Cause was born, and here we are celebrating ten years.”
